Polishers/finishers protect components and completed items with a number of different types of products from paints, stains, laquers etc.
They normally work with wood and other materials. Items can include Furniture, Joinery, Kitchens etc.
Restorers repair and renovate furniture. The work can range from minor repairs, such as re-gluing an arm or drawer, to completely rebuilding a piece, including making missing parts.
Work based learning will provide hands on experience and help to develop a broad range of skills and knowledge to meet your employer business needs.
Experienced finishers can make decisions such as the type of material needed to finish components / products, the ability to follow specifications, skills to work out amount of materials needed.
• Select and prepare materials and components
• Repair damaged items.
• Prepare and treat wood to give it a smooth finish and bring out the natural look of the timber.
• Finishing items ensuring they are ready for sale.
• Work using a mechanised spray-painting method or by hand polishing.
• Colour match paint and stains.
• Spray on lacquers, two pack finishes, paints and hot lacquers.
• Remove old finishes by stripping, scraping sanding or applying solvents or paint strippers.
• Maintain finishing equipment.
• Work within environmental, health and safety regulations.
As part of your Apprenticeship, you will achieve a number of recognised qualifications.
• Diploma (NVQ) in Furniture (demonstrating your practical skills)
• Technical Certificate in Finishing (demonstrating your knowledge and understanding)
• Key Skills
• From 1 to 3 years to Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 (dependant on individual abilities and business
needs). Apprenticeship at Level 2, achieved in the first instance.
Progression can include the following:

• Health & Safety
• FREE for 16-18 year olds
• 19 + employer contribution POA
• Employers who pay Constructions Skills maybe eligible for additional grants
