Noise is part of everyday life, but loud noise can permanently damage hearing. Young or old, once hearing is lost, it will never come back.
Legal Requirements
By law, every employer MUST assess noise levels in the workplace, which means regularly undertaking noise surveys of your facility. If a noise survey reveals noise levels above certain thresholds then you are obliged by law to take measures to reduce employees’ exposure.
If your company operates woodworking machinery it is almost inevitable that you WILL have to take action to reduce employees’ exposure.
Survey and Report
Our approach to noise surveys is action based. We measure the noise levels in your premises and using NOISE CALCULATORS match them to the normal working patterns of your employees, which will include supervisors, managers, office staff and visitors as well as machine operators who are the main people at risk in your factory.
On completion of the survey, we will provide you with an easy to use report, that will give practical guidance on the measures you will need to take to protect the hearing of your employees, and comply with the regulations that came into effect in April 2006.
Health Effects
Noise at work can cause hearing loss that can be temporary or permanent. People often experience temporary deafness after leaving a noisy place. Although hearing recovers within a few hours, this should not be ignored. It is a sign that if you continue to expose employees to the noise, hearing could be permanently damaged.
Hearing loss is not the only problem. People may develop tinnitus (ringing, whistling,
buzzing or humming in the ears), a distressing condition which can lead to disturbed sleep.
